If you've ever wondered 'there are just too many - how do I choose', you are not alone. Think of socks a bit like you would shoes. There are so many shoes, yet we choose . For example, heels for days when you want to show off your legs, ballet flats for that super comfy feel or perhaps a pair of Nike Free runners when you want to go a bit minimalistic. The point is there are shoes for everything and socks now are no different. Some contain lots of cushioning, others contain special fibres designed to promote healing such as SeaCell and the list goes on. To make narrowing your choice here a few tips!
1. Think about what you intend to use the socks for?
This may sound obvious, but it’s something often overlooked. Think about it. Have you ever seen a guy at the gym wearing a pair of Holeproof Explorers to pound the treadmill? Despite being great socks in their own right, they weren't made for running. They aren't made with any of the wicking fibres, such as Coolmax, Thor-Lon or Modal. They don't include additional cushioning in impact areas, mesh insteps and the list goes on. The point is if you're wanting socks to run in buy running socks. Want a tough a durable work sock then the Explorer is right up there with the best of them.
2. What level of cushioning do you like?
Some of us like thin, some moderate and some thick cushioning. Some of us don't care! Whatever your fancy you should at least give this some thought when buying. For example, thin socks are a good choice in a hot summer and are ideal for a gym workout, but may not be suitable for extended hiking carrying a pack. I'm tipping you'll want a little more cushioning unless you enjoy icing your feet of a night!
Consider how much room you have in your shoes. Some of us use thick socks to fill those shoes that don't quite fit, whilst others have shoes that fit like Lycra! No good buying a thick pair of Thorlo socks, as you are going to struggle. It always pay when you’re buying a new pair of shoes to buy your socks first. That way you can take them with you when trying on your shoes to ensure the perfect fit.
Another important point when thinking about cushioning is to keep in mind, as we get older we actually lose fat from our fat pads on the ball of our feet (why can’t we lose fat elsewhere). As these fat pads get thinner, some of us will experience pain in this area. This is called Metatarsalgia. Moderate and thick cushioning in our socks helps make up the cushioning we have lost in our fat pads and lessens the impact.
3. What sock height do you like?
Micro-crew, mini-crew, crew, calf high, thigh high and the list goes on. Of course the seasons will play a part as to our choice, but think about the activity as well. In winter, business socks which are calf high are a godsend, as they keep your legs warm whilst still looking smart. Think VK. And for the blokes thinking calf high - no way, who is going to see them under your pants other than those who you want to show!
If you're hiking you will find most good hiking socks are crew socks and for good reason. The additional height gives some additional protection to the ankle, both from the boot and when on the track.
Sometimes there’s good reason for the height, other times it’s a personal choice. A few things to think about anyhow!
4. Think about the fibres in the sock?
You’re not supposed to be an expert and know what's in them, but taking an interest in what the socks are made out of can be worthwhile. Think of when you're buying groceries, many of us now take note of what's in food for a host of reasons. Doing the same with socks can help narrow your choice. For example socks containing Nylon will generally be more durable as Nylon is a tough hard wearing fibre. The downside is Nylon can be a little harsher than other fabrics such as Modal, which will feel gentler and softer against the skin.
Spandex or Lycra are often used in socks to assist in stretching and form to your foot to provide a better fit. You may choose a sock containing these fibres for that reason alone.
5. Finally Buy specific!
If you’re after a compression sock, buy a compression sock. If you’re after a running sock buy a running sock. Note some socks can be used for a range of activities i.e. you can wear a running sock for walking or in the gym , but forget about buying the one sock that will do everything. Buy specific, your feet will thank you.

Charli says:
My Mother wore these sock til 89 and they were perfect for her aging feet. These socks will last I do beeilve forever! The cushioned soles feel great, and if cold feet are your particular issue these will solve that. I now buy them myself and love the feel in and out of shoes if you have a NO SHOES sort of house, these socks are perfect for warmth and comfort. I just can't recommend them enough except to say also fantastic for walking/running/yoga/hanging out in the hammock afternoons!
